Magnetic vs. Retractable Garage Door Screens: Which Is Right for Your Phoenix Garage?

Magnetic garage door screens are the more affordable, DIY-friendly option, starting at $78.99, while retractable garage door screens cost more, starting at $1,581.99, but give you a cleaner, hands-free way to open and close the screen. Here's how the two compare for Phoenix Valley homeowners who want to use their garage as extra living or work space without letting in bugs, dust, or haboob grit.

How Magnetic Garage Screens Work

A magnetic garage screen is a mesh curtain with embedded magnets down the center seam, hung across your garage door opening. Walk or drive through it and the two halves separate, then snap back together behind you. There's no mechanism to operate — it's simply there whenever the garage door is open, and it comes down easily when you need full access.

How Retractable Garage Screens Work

A retractable garage screen rolls up into a housing mounted above the garage door opening, similar to a retractable screen door but sized for the full width of a one- or two-car garage. Pull it down (or trigger it, on motorized versions) to cover the opening, and roll it back up out of the way when you need the garage fully open, such as when pulling a vehicle in or out.

Cost Comparison

• Magnetic garage screens — from $78.99
• Retractable garage door screens — from $1,581.99

The gap in price comes down to mechanism and materials: a magnetic screen is essentially a large mesh curtain with no moving hardware, while a retractable screen includes a housing, tensioning system, and side tracks engineered to handle repeated daily use and a much larger opening.

Durability in Arizona Heat and Dust

Both options hold up reasonably well in the Valley's heat and dust, but they age differently. Magnetic screens are lightweight and simple, so there's little that can mechanically fail, though the mesh itself can fade and become brittle with years of direct sun exposure on a west-facing garage. Retractable screens keep their mesh protected inside the housing when not in use, which shields it from UV exposure and dust buildup, but the retraction mechanism and side tracks benefit from occasional cleaning to keep sand and grit from affecting smooth operation.

Which One Should You Choose?

• Choose magnetic if you want the lowest-cost option, plan to install it yourself, and don't mind a simple curtain-style screen you push through by hand.
• Choose retractable if you want a cleaner, more polished look, plan to open and close the screen frequently, or want the mesh protected when it's not in use.
• Either option works well for homeowners who use their garage as a workshop, gym, or hangout space and want airflow without the bugs and dust that come with an open door.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a magnetic garage screen myself?

Yes — magnetic garage screens are designed for straightforward DIY installation, typically attaching to the door frame with hook-and-loop fastener or a simple track.

Do retractable garage screens work on two-car garages?

Yes, retractable garage screens are available sized for both single and double-car garage openings.

Will a garage screen block airflow?

No — both magnetic and retractable garage screens use mesh material that allows airflow through while keeping insects and debris out.

How long do magnetic garage screens last in Arizona heat?

With normal use, magnetic garage screens typically hold up for several years, though direct, intense sun exposure on unshaded garages can shorten the mesh's lifespan compared to a shaded opening.

Can a retractable garage screen be motorized?

Motorized options are available for retractable garage screens for homeowners who want a fully hands-free experience — ask us about availability for your garage size during your quote.
